More than 27,000 risk improvement requirements were raised across 16,800 commercial risk assessments carried out by RiskSTOP over the past year, with electrical safety, combustible storage, and hot work controls remaining among the most common concerns identified by surveyors.
RiskSTOP’s latest Risk Management Infographic highlights the areas most frequently requiring intervention, while also pointing to several challenging risks attracting increased industry attention.
‘Harder to ignore’
Among the risks attracting greater attention are lithium-ion batteries, particularly as their use becomes more widespread across commercial environments.
Whether linked to charging systems, storage, or equipment, the concern is less about the technology itself and more about the pace of adoption around it. Fires involving lithium-ion batteries remain difficult to control, placing greater focus on how these systems are installed, managed, and maintained.
The infographic also places stronger emphasis on green walls and blue roofs, which are building features increasingly associated with sustainability and climate resilience.
While these systems are designed with the environment in mind, they can also introduce additional property protection considerations if not properly planned or maintained. Questions around fire behaviour, water management, access, and long-term upkeep are becoming part of wider risk management discussions.
Other technologies continue to raise similar questions. Solar installations, EV charging infrastructure, and battery energy storage systems all remain prominent areas of focus as businesses balance sustainability goals with operational resilience.
Alongside these established concerns, attention is also beginning to turn towards areas such as heat pumps using flammable refrigerants and modern methods of construction, particularly where fire performance and installation standards are still developing.
The risks that remain consistent
While newer technologies continue to attract attention, many of the most common risk requirements remain familiar.
Electrical testing once again sits at the top of the list, followed by combustible storage controls, hot work management, and fire risk assessments – all issues that continue to form the foundation of effective risk management.
The infographic’s Top 10 Risk Requirements provide a snapshot of the areas most frequently requiring improvement, helping to highlight where preventative measures continue to make the greatest difference.
Looking beyond the obvious
Lisa Beaton, RiskSTOP’s Head of Operations for Risk Management and Surveys, said: “Many of the risks we deal with today are not necessarily new. What’s changing is how they interact with modern buildings, technologies, and ways of working.
“The increased use of battery systems, sustainable construction methods, and alternative energy solutions means risk management has to remain practical, informed, and adaptable. Understanding these risks early is key to protecting people, property, and business continuity.”
RiskSTOP’s latest infographic offers a clear snapshot of the issues currently shaping conversations around commercial risk, from longstanding priorities through to the challenges becoming harder to ignore.
